Advocacy for Immigrants at St. Francis

St. Francis of Assisi Parish Presents

COOPERATE, COLLABORATE,

OR SIT BY AND WATCH IT HAPPEN:

Moving from Mass Deportation

to Humane Immigration Policy.

Wednesday, July 8th, 2026 @ 6:30-8:30PM,

The Assisi Center, St. Francis Ann Arbor

ALL ARE WELCOME!
REGISTRATION REQUESTED .

William Lopez  will share stories based on documenting the harms of deportation in communities throughout the US, discuss the lessons in resiliency and organizing that immigrant communities - often in collaboration with Christian churches - have given to us.

A panel discussion will follow the keynote. We will end by reflecting on how we can collectively develop a better, more humane immigration system.

Join us as we honor Juneteenth — praying, reflecting on freedom, resilience, and the ongoing journey toward justice for all.

The keynote presenter will be:
William D. Lopez, PhD, MPH

A Parishioner and Clinical Associate Professor, Associate Chair Department of Health Behavior and Health Equity and Faculty Associate, Latina/o Studies Program University of Michigan.

How did we get here?

  • Global displacement driven by war, violence, poverty, and environmental pressures.
  • Economic interdependence, labor market demands, and disparities in opportunity between nations.
  • An outdated and overburdened immigration system with limited legal pathways and significant processing backlogs.
  • Decades of political polarization and the absence of comprehensive immigration reform.

As we commemorate the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, we will reflect on how notable events in US history have shaped US immigration policy, leading to a platform of mass deportation and lack of due process for migrants, in a country founded on waves of mass migrations over two and a half centuries!

Your voice.

Your compassion.
Your action.

Our future.

TOGETHER, WE CAN BUILD A MORE JUST AND HUMANE IMMIGRATION SYSTEM.

"For I was a stranger and you welcomed me." - Matthew 25:35

ALL ARE WELCOME!   REGISTRATION REQUESTED .    Please RSVP sign-up at this link here to join us  ....so we can prepare appropriately. All are welcome to join us.

Through fellowship, breaking bread together, prayer, testimony, and conversation, we will consider how we are called to respond—guided by the question: "What would Jesus do in these situations?"

There are many ways to help—through financial support, volunteering, and accompaniment. Current and emerging needs may include assistance with legal expenses, food and basic necessities, transportation, and personal accompaniment.

For example, when a need arises, we may contact you by email, text, or phone to see if you are available. This could include picking someone up in the Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti area, driving them to an appointment, waiting with them, and bringing them safely home.       By serving in these ways, we seek to recognize and serve Christ in the immigrant among us.

Please fill out the survey on the recent session and how you would like to discern and support Christ the Immigrant and the SNL Circle Ministry using the link here.

May the peace of Christ be with all our sisters and brothers.  Thanks for your support.

Consider making a donation in support of the  Outreach for Christ the Immigrant   Ministry  @ St. Francis Parish here on our ParishSoft-Giving:   Scroll down to look down-under the Outreach option in the list and donate to help those who are "at the bottom"  - the lowest-income households, struggling workers, and those most vulnerable to poverty and inequality.

Inspired by the Michigan Bishops’ newsletter article, “Seeing Christ the Immigrant,” we invite you to prayerfully consider how you might share your time, resources, and gifts in support of vulnerable members of our parish community.

Our parish works collaboratively with Strangers No Longer (SNL) and with Washtenaw Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights (WICIR) .

“In the Church no one is a stranger, and the Church is not foreign to anyone, anywhere. As a sacrament of unity and thus a sign and a binding force for the whole human race, the Church is the place where ‘illegal’ immigrants are also recognized and accepted as brothers and sisters. It is the task of the various Dioceses actively to ensure that these people, who are obliged to live outside the safety net of civil society, may find a sense of brotherhood in the Christian community.” – Pope John Paul II for World Migration Day, 1996
