Blessing of the Food on
Holy Saturday, April 4th at 12 noon
in Church
(please arrive early as the blessing begins on-time and lasts for about 20 mins)
On Holy Saturday, the day before Easter, families may bring baskets of food to church for the traditional blessing of the Easter baskets.
Bring your beautiful prepared basket filled with foods to be eaten by your family on Easter. You may also bringing some traditional foods for blessing:
- Eggs – new life and Christ’s Resurrection
- Bread – Jesus, the Bread of Life
- Kielbasa - sausage - or other meats – God’s generosity and celebration
- Salt – preservation and purity
- Olive oil – healing, strength, and the anointing of God’s Spirit
- Lamb (often made out of butter or as a cake or sweet bread) – Christ, the Lamb of God
The priest blesses the baskets with holy water, and your now blessed food is eaten by your family on Easter Sunday as the first meal of the Resurrection celebration.
It is a joyful, family-centered tradition that connects faith, culture, and the hope of new life in Christ.
